Starting a business in Norway
General introduction and
useful links
1.Registration
Process
It is compulsory for all companies to register with the Register
of Business Enterprises in Norway (RBE). As opposed to the Netherlands, is it not
compulsory to register with the local chamber of commerce as RBE has taken over their
registration function.
For partnerships and sole proprietors the registration
fee is 2400 NOK, whereas limited liability companies have to pay 5400 NOK.
The registration form (blue colour) is still available
only in Norwegian and the same goes for the accompanying handbook.
VAT
If turnover exceeds 30 000 NOK in a 12 month period, then
the company must register for VAT. At the back of the blue form used to register a
business, there is a green form for VAT registration.
The county tax offices are responsible for collecting VAT
and this is where the companies send their VAT accounts.
Local Tax Office
All companies must register with the local tax office.
Depending on the form of business enterprise, the tax office will calculate advance
payment of tax and/or advance tax witholding.
2. Employing people
If you employ others or are an
employee of a joint-stock company owned by yourself, this must be registered with the
National Insurance Office in the municipality in which the business operates. Please
contact the local National Insurance Office to obtain registration forms for the
register of employers and employees.
Directorate of Labour Inspection (Arbeidstilsynet)
must also be notified at least one week before trading/business activities start.
